Camp Nerdly 3: The Blogging

Jun 01, 2009 10:16

This past weekend was Camp Nerdly 3.

Short form: Had great conversations, played fun games, drank regional sodas (Cheerwine and Dr. Enuf FTW!), and made silly faces at well-behaved babies. An all-around win.

Also, for the vid-inclined, Jason Morningstar's One Cool Thing I Saw At Camp Nerdly 3 on YouTube.

Otherwise, the ( long day-by-day breakdown behind the cut... )

Sounds like a blast. I really enjoyed the video.

Did I ever tell you that I used to know Nathan McQuillen, the creator of 1000 Blank White Cards? His mother was a NOW person, and friends with my mother back when we were living in Wisconsin. I remember being a toddler when he was an infant.

Now that you've had time for some reflection, can you tell me how Xenon: felt?

There's just something about the set-up that I don't dig.

I'm all for exploration of a setting, but I feel I need some overarching rubric to explain WHY I'm exploring that setting... "Looking for new sources of gold/furs/spices" or "Surveying a planet for colonization" or "learning about the F'tang culture for diplomatic reasons."

Sort of a signpost to tell me what the session/campaign is about.

Yeah, the challenge is that we can't know that until we're into the setting a little bit. I took your crit to heart and wound up writing a bit about the home society into the rules, which is that your home society is by definition conservative. Your character is either non-conservative and wants to leave and see the world, or is conservative and must leave against their will. That needs exploration ( ... )
