Random Turkey-fuelled thought: WKRP in Cincinnati. Firefly. Compare and contrast. (I can come up with character-to-character mappings quite easily, provided you count Mr. Carlson as the ship. I bet you can, too.)

Again...
Thanks for sharing that - I haven't seen that scene in years. And now that you mention it the radio booth does look a lot like the bridge with the four of them sitting around.
So, Jennifer as companion, Bailey as Kaylee, would Herb be Jayne? Johnny as Book. Andy Travis as Mal. Venus as Zoe (captain's old friend and confidant). I would feel uncomfortable listing Les as Wash, but there is a similarity.
It's been a while since I watched any significant quantity of WKRP, but from what I recall, I think Mr. Carlson's actually a fairly good map to River, with the station as Serenity.
He's normally a non-functioning part of the team, or gets confused about things. But every once in a while, when he needs to be, he suddenly becomes lucid.
Furthermore, given that wild turkeys do fly, I can envision River's chain of logic to explain why she started dropping turkeys out of the ship. Although she probably wouldn't say "As God is my witness..."

Jennifer = Inara
Venus = Book
Bailey = Kaylee and/or Zoe
Les = Simon
Herb = Jayne
Johnny = Wash
Mr. Carlson = River and/or Serenity itself
WKRP needed at least one more female character to properly map, two more if you (like me) are uncomfortable mapping River to Mr. Carlson.
(You might be able to use Mrs. Carlson somewhere in here, but she's just a supporting character.)
