Gary Vaynerchuk gets a 10-Book Deal with Harper Collins.

The publisher recently said they would pay no advances over $500K. Vaynerchuk's deal is 7 figures. (Granted, that could be less than $500K a book...it is, after all, a 10-book deal!)

Even crazier than a 10-book deal?

While I didn't contribute my top 10 (admittedly, my knowledge of literature is somewhat lacking - I blame television, growing up :)

One of mine was Hawking's 'A Brief History of Time' which was released back in '88, which is the most recent book I can think of.

I think part of it is you definitely need time to see how it holds up over the years. Hard to see if the Harry Potter books are important until you can look at the books a few decades from now and see.

The problem with important books is the same problem we have with important scientific discoveries. When the total number of either is low, each one is massively more important. Today we have so many books, none of them have the impact that the early books did, in part because they have smaller audiences who have more choices ( ... )
