I find that Facebook and LJ serve two different purposes. FB is very superficial and 'social' where as LJ is intimate and longwinded. I wouldn't write a long essay on FB and expect thoughtful commentary; I would on LJ. I would liken FB to the hallway chatter in high school, and LJ as the late night conversations you make after school with your best buds. Both have their places.

That's a good way of looking at it.

I "keep up" more on Facebook because so many people I know are genuinely too busy, or perceive their lives that way, and the little status updates don't take long at all. (Same thing with Twitter.)

I definitely prefer LiveJournal. The notes feature on Facebook still doesn't lend itself to lengthier discussions, and even if it did--again--I think the appeal of Facebook is it's quick.

I will never have the discussions I have on Livejournal on Facebook. Facebook is more, "Here are a couple pictures and this is what I'm doing, and by the way, here's another annoying application that's just like the other one I sent a week ago, but a little different."

LiveJournal is definitely more suited to really discussing things.

Like you said, both serve a purpose, and I really do dig the hell out of them.

Facebook is like "I wonder what Bob is up to these days?" and Live Journal is like "I wonder what Bob is thinking so I can correct his thinking via dissertation?"

I have become an expert at blocking applications. There are maybe five that i participate in, but that's my limit.
