I saw that yesterday--it's what made me think about the storm drain post :)
I haven't read the entire interview yet, but the photos are beautiful.
The drains we wandered all seemed to be 36" pipes. There were a couple wider pipes, and some "rooms" we could almost stand in, but for the most part it was typical storm drains for us.
Some friends of mine and I kinda did the same thing. There were large (5' or more diamager) storm drains going through Benbrook, TX and we used to go exploring like it was a D&D dungeon... he he he. Never really encountered anything dangerous tho :( Perhaps the most exciting thing that happened was when we tried to navigate by candlelight (instead of flashlight), and our candles went out in a dark area.... basically had to feel our way around until we were able to get out via a manhole in the ceiling.
I grew up across the street from a big seminary and we used to run around in the place. One day we found a bunch of old tunnels linking the buildings on the seminary. They were larger tunnels, and all my friends--like you--explored like it was D&D (cause we were D&D geeks).
It was pretty creepy because you'd wander along, a door would open, and priests of monks would wander by and tyou had to hide.
We never brought candles down. Losing your light in a tunnel and having to feel your way out had to be creepy!
The tunnel thing is definitely something I can get into, especially after reading this

And amusingly enough, that's my full name - but it's not me.

I'd love to explore something larger.
