It was one of those moments that made me think, "This is it--I'm about to die..."
It's not something a twelve-year-old should think.
The infamous "they" always say it: "Never swim alone."
But I wasn't technically alone--I was at the beach and under the care of a sixteen-year-old lifeguard more interested in the sixteen-year-old boy talking to

And you can be if you don't fight being swept out a couple miles. You can swim back.
The thing that freaks me out is you can swim those couple miles back, only to find yourself miles back out from shore. Then you think about all that's beneath you...stuff you can't see. And you realize you put all that effort into a couple mile swim back, only to be swept right back where you started.
It's futile and evil and creeps me out...

I was going to drown in three and a half feet of water and wouldn't be found until some kid climbing the ladder to get out of the lake stepped on the dead, dumb idea kid stuck to the ladder underwater.
I threw my head back and laughed at that!

It would be priceless to see the kid's face who stepped on the dead kid beneath the ladder.
That's the kinda thing that induces therapy later in life.
PSYCHOLOGIST: "Now tell me, why are you afraid of ladders? It's a silly superstition."
PERSON: "I stepped on a dead kid filled with water and algae when I was in sixth grade--the kid was stuck undewater beneath a ladder and I'll never forget the feeling of their bloated body on my foot..."
PSYCHOLOGIST: "Okay, that's friggin' creepy!"

I just about drowned once too. Once again, careless teenager not paying attention to young child. We were at sylvan lake visiting someone's house. The teeanger took me (6yrs old) to a friends house with a pool. She gave me a round frog inflatable to float inside. I was in the pool kicking around when suddenly I slipped out of it. I don't know how deep it was (maybe 4-5ft?) but it was over my head.
Funny I remember everything so vividly, even seeing under water. I somehow found myself to the edge of the pool hanging on, almost like someone pushed me up. I didn't know how to swim.
I was terrified - it really startled me to go under like that.
I got out of the pool and went back to the house we were visiting. It's no fun to swim after a bad experience!

That had to be terrifying for you, not knowing how to swim and being able to see everything so clearly, though.
Creeeeeeeepy!
