They're doing some work on the road past my neighbourhood. I was led to believe that they're widening, but so far it just seems to be utility work and pouring new sidewalks.

I hope they're planning to change the level of the road, though, because they just put in this fire hydrant, and it's about two feet below the current grade. Of

If the fires are underground, this hydrant might actually work well.

Well sure, but we are all safer with these new, underground-ready hydrants in place. I wish my street had some - the only thing we are prepared for is a boring old surface fire.
