Is anyone here on disability? If so did you get it easily or have to go through the whole process with lawyers and all that?? I'm only 18 and I've never worked because I've had CFS for 5 years... but anyways my parents pushed me to file for it so it'll be easier to pay for my prescriptions and so I'll have SOMETHING when I finally do move out. They send you to a psychiatrist to rule out psychiatric causes.

I would highly recommend getting a lawyer (if you can afford it) and make sure your medical doctors help you by writing letters stating your case. I applied about 7 years ago and was turned down. I didn't know the things I know now, though. I didn't know about lawyers and doctors letters and support groups that help. I just did everything on my own and was instantly turned down ( ... )

Yea my doctor has taken me under his wing as his special "project" basically and told me he'll write letters or do whatever he has to do to help me get on disability. So that'll help.

I'm not too sure what's going to happen with the psychiatrist I saw because when I told him I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome he said "oh, so you have been diagnosed with AIDS?" and I had to explain to him what exactly it was that I had while he sat at a desk looking out the window now even looking at me (and yawning... he did a lot of that) so that was a little discouraging but I'm not going to give up on this. Even if I don't get much money anything would help... at least to cover the cost of some of my medical bills (co-pays because I'm lucky enough to have insurance somehow) and prescriptions (which my insurance unfortunately doesn't cover).

Thanks :-)

I'm in Australia and I'm on a disability pension. I realise the systems are different, but I did have to go through a lot to get it.

I went to Centrelink and picked up a form to take home and fill out. There was a lot of information needed, and I put a lot of effort into it, getting letters from doctors and things like that. It was a while ago now, so I don't remember exactly what I had to do ( ... )

I'm in the UK and have been relatively lucky, but basically it's a nightmare everywhere, from what I hear.

You need to know the system and how to play it, because it definitely won't be geared towards ME/CFIDS. Get professional advice on this. Hunt down the CFIDS associations, they should be able to advise you on how to fill in the forms and what to say to examining doctors and so on.
