So the rest of choir tour was fun, if kind of exhausting. We saw Chicago Lyric's production of Die Fledermaus, which a hilarious and impressive romp -- all singers concerned win major points for being willing to throw themselves all over the stage for a laugh. Also 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, which was extremely cute. (Mum, was it the ( Read more... )

Is your LGBTQ Lit class with Natasha Hurley? I think it is. I'm just going to warn you, she drove me nuts on several occasions. "Look at what the WORDS are DOING." Oh my God, just shoot me. I mean, she's a nice person and very knowledgeable, but she will never let you talk. Make her let you talk.

Anyway, I'm sorry I missed choir tour now. Except for maybe the creepy fake church. I'm glad I missed that. But, oh well.

Make sure you schedule time for eating and sleeping amongst all that intellectual and emotional growth.

Gah. Yeah. That's a phrase she used last night. All my English-class allergies sprang up immediately. Uh oh... So who ARE the best English profs, in your opinion?

(I'm sorry you missed choir tour too. )

You know, in my years of being an English major I've only had 4 different Profs. One left and another is Natasha Hurley. Prof. Krier's pretty good, if you can tolerate her complete insanity. Ayse Cellikol might be one of the better Profs, but I've heard that many others disagree with me on that one.

My department sucks.

Anyway, with Natasha, just do lots of close reading and she'll be happy. (blech!)

You know, she actually left a lot of room for discussion. But I felt like I was scrambling yesterday, to speak the same language as her and the other people in the class. Having not taken an English class since highschool (or any kind of super liberal artsy class in general), I felt like I was trying to use my grade school Spanish to express any observations I had to make. And I had the weirdest feeling... you know when you're hanging out with a group of people who know each other really well, and you say something, and there's instantly this sense that what you said brought something to everyone else's mind, or made them all suddenly have exactly the same opinion of you, but they're not saying anything? Maybe exchanging a sideways glance, but not laughing or letting you in on the joke? That's what it felt like. I would say something, and there would be this Thing in the room, and I'd feel the need to apologize, like "I'm sorry, I'm NOT an English or a WGS person, what I just said was probably either really obvious or totally wrong ( ... )

You are crazy ambitious as always. :-P But I cheer for you!

And, and, squee!! Spelling Bee! Such a cute musical, I mean I only have the CD but I want to see it. And do you know, Die Fledermaus is the only opera I've ever seen. ^^;; How silly.

(Lastly, boo for creepy churches. D:)

You really should see it, if you get the chance. The music was clever-ish, but the real fun was in the dialogue and the acting, I thought. The production I saw, and all the productions I've heard of, have had total virtuosos playing the children -- they were all totally convincing geeky 12 year-olds. Awesome. And sometimes painful. Because that was definitely me, not too long ago. And still, sometimes. Yeah.

... And watch more opera! I hereby poke you bossily in the direction of Carmen, The Marriage of Figaro, La Bohème, and La Traviata. Cuz those tend to be good introductions. *orders you around*

Buy me tickets, and I'll see what I can do. ;-)

Just kidding. Honestly I'd be interested in going to see more opera if I had a) money, b) someone to go with, and c) the faintest idea what's showing around here. ^^;; (That last one is probably the easiest to overcome.) But yeah, I definitely will if I get the chance. :-D

I was kidding too, really, but... Yeah, the ticket prices do tend to be a bit ouch. Although a ton of places have student discounts, or (often even better) rush tickets. I've sat in some amazing seats for ridiculously low prices getting rush tickets.

As for point b, there's no underestimating the pleasure of getting dressed up and going someplace by yourself and standing around looking mysterious. The most interesting people come and talk to you. And if they don't, you can just feel mysterious. And aloof. And all nifty like that.

Are you anywhere near here?
