When I was a teen-ager, I refused to go get cigarettes for my mom, and I told her why: I wasn't going to contribute to something which would help kill her.
That was 35 years ago.
She's seventy now, and in an assisted living facility, unable to get out to buy her own. When I visit, I take her cigarettes. I can't see torturing an old woman, already suffering from Alzheimer's and fibromyalgia, by making her go through withdrawal in addition.
It hurts every time I go see her.
