Why hello there, Harry Potter fandom!

Aug 31, 2011 19:49

extemporally commented recently-ish that reading Harry Potter fic is what every fannish person does when they're between fandoms. Actually lately I've been reading so much HP fic I'm practically back in the fandom, which I never thought would happen. Anyway, what I found was that once you've been out of it for a while, HP is actually really hard to navigate ( Read more... )

recs: hp, recs, recs: slash, recs: gen, recs: het, recs: femmeslash

:)
I have been wondering vaguely if I should do a recc list, having read a fair amount of fic for the first time in 4 years or so... but then I'd have to actually admit I read fic, and which fic I read, and then people might judge me. Or something. Maybe I'll filter it. Though you've probably read everything I've read, since I started with your recc list! HP fandom is just so huge... so many authors, so many pairings... trying to find something like 'well-written Luna/Neville' is hard. And everyone seems to have stopped writing after 2007 :( I'm kinda surprised I haven't seen more movie-inspired revisits. Not that I have looked that hard I guess, because I am not supposed to be spending precious computer time reading fic, I should be doing work, yes... anyway, thanks for posting these and further impairing my productivity :)

This is true! I've never had that healthy embarrassment I really ought about this kind of thing. From memory, my response to first discovering fic was to immediately post with "Look, you guys! Fic!", and then be all sorts of surpised when it turned out that secretly everybody else already knew.

I'd be terribly interested to know what your favourites are, though, if you did decided to rec.

Also, in terms of well-written Luna/Neville, I would absolutely recommend (again) the one in this post. It's engaging and heartwarming as well as being - this is another thing I should be embarrassed to admit - the most relatable fictionalisation of trans experience that I've come across. It was reading this fic that really made me imagine, for the first time, how terrifying it would be to have the world telling you that you had to be the wrong gender. (It also reads very true to Luna's character, and to Neville's.)

I wasn't going to read that now as 'novelette' sounds long... but I did, and it is great! Luna is so perfect. Utterly believable.

Ditto the Luna/Neville fic! (Hi hi, I came back here to be delighted about your rec lists again and then realised I'd already commented so couldn't reeeeally keysmash to greatest effect. But, you know :') And then I actually read from it, so!)

Anyway, yeah -- the Luna/Neville fic! How so heartwarming, oh man <3
