Yunho slipped away from the celebrations to a quiet spot away from the noise and alcohol and the people he had come to call friends over the past few years. The party was a loud and happy occasion and while Yunho was amidst the dancing bodies, arms around as many people as he could reach, there was a point in the night when the melancholy set in; when reality and responsibility and the certainty of a dangerous future hit him in waves of nausea until he was forced to duck out into the open night air.
How many of his friends would he lose before the year was out?
He believed in his own strength and the strength of the human race, but Yunho had seen too much to think that a war could be won without casualties. The thought made his breath catch and his chest tighten. It was alright to be afraid, his grandfather had told him, back when their home was still safe within the wall and his father was still alive. It was alright to be afraid because that was what made them human and from that fear, courage could be born. And Yunho had courage, he was ready to risk his body, his life to fight for freedom, his heart however waivered with it came to risking the lives of those he cared about.
‘And people say I over think,’ a voice cut through his thoughts.
Yunho stiffened at the sudden company, but offered a smile when he saw Changmin staring down at him.
Changmin sighed and moved to sit on the bench beside him. Their arms brushed against each other even though the bench was wide enough for two people to sit comfortably apart.
Yunho reached out to tuck a strand of loose hair behind Changmin’s ear. Changmin’s breath hitched and Yunho let his hand drop hesitantly.
‘You should join the Military Police.’
Changmin snapped his head around to look at Yunho, but Yunho just stared at the empty bench opposite them.
‘You’re smart; you’ll definitely do well. Maybe one day you can get married and start a family -‘
‘I’ve already told you I’m joining the Survey Corps,’ Changmin interrupted. ‘I don’t want to get married. I don’t want to start a family.’
Yunho’s fingers tightened, gripping at his own thighs hard enough to hurt. What he wanted to do was to take Changmin by his shoulders and shaking some sense into him and maybe hold Changmin against his chest and never let go.
‘I’m not doing it for you,’ Changmin added, but they both know it was a lie.
They sat in silence after that, because Yunho has known Changmin since he was boy and even back then, Changmin was a force to be reckoned with when his mind was set on something. The small new kid in town with silence mirth and fierce eyes; Yunho hadn’t liked him at first, but when Yunho stepped in front him, telling the neighbourhood bullies to back off and pick on someone their own size, Changmin had smiled at him, eyes suddenly curving and mismatched and it had taken Yunho’s breath away.
‘We’re all going to die anyway,’ Changmin spoke quietly, breaking the silence.
Yunho shook his head; he couldn’t believe that, neither should Changmin -
‘What I mean is,’ Changmin continued, ‘If we’re all going to die anyway, then I don’t want to die alone.’
Yunho’s body sagged heavily against the bench.
‘I don’t want you to die alone,’ Changmin muttered, it was as soft as the night breeze but Yunho caught every word.
He pressed against Changmin.
‘Your hair is too long.’
‘I will cut it,’ Changmin said defiantly, eyes bright and challenging, ready to defend his decision.
It made Yunho smile. He let his head drop onto Changmin’s shoulder. It took a moment longer for Changmin to relax.
‘Maybe they’ll refuse to accept you,’ Yunho taunted.
‘Maybe they’ll refuse to accept you,’ Changmin snorted and then they grinned at each other because they were at the top of their class and this was about as close to Yunho agreeing to Changmin’s decision as it would get.
‘Don’t be afraid,’ Changmin whispered against Yunho’s cheek, his breath glossed over the corner of Yunho’s lips.
‘I won’t die as long as you’re still standing.’
