When I was young it was The Count of Monte Cristo. I found it on my parents' shelves when I was 9 (a Hebrew translation, of course) and so didn't want it to end that when I reached the last page, I flipped the book over and started again. 11 times. I've no idea how many times I've read it altogether.
When I was in the army, I wanted to learn French, so I took the original and the translation and started working through them together. By the time I reached a hundred pages into the French, I discovered that the Hebrew was a truncated version (although it didn't say so anywhere), and about a third of the book was missing. So I just made do with the French. They cut out some of the best bits!
But my adult fav. is probably Lord of the Rings. It's a much broader scope, with a linguist's eye for detail, not just a love-hate-revenge story.
