Chapter 11
"You're cheating on Kei chan."
Kusano whispered to Shige's ear from behind, stating the nonsense. He put his arm around the older one's shoulder, startling Shige. They were walking towards jimusho building - Kusano was going to rehearse for his butai while Shige and the rest of NewS were going to do a final rehearsal for their newest single.
"What are you talking about?!" Shige answered absent-mindedly, ruffling Kusano's hair.
"Don't deny it, Shige."
"I am not denying it because I'm not cheating on him. What makes you think of that?"
"Already forget yesterday? Yappari ojisan dayo." Kusano sighed.
"Oi." Shige furrowed and glared jokingly at Kusano. The younger of them shrugged.
"How are you by the way?" Shige asked, trying to change the topic.
"I'm fine. I'm getting used to be this busy again." Kusano answered while bouncing on his feet.
"That's good." Shige smiled, watching the younger one looking so cheerful today.
Being around Kusano always brighten his mood. Kusano was like the younger brother he didn't have. All this while, he had always gone to Kusano whenever he felt troubled over things. Not that being with Koyama was not good back then. But somehow he always felt that he gained more energy whenever he was with Kusano - mainly because Kusano would take him to do a sport or the kind to distract him from all the burdens weighing upon his shoulders.
Kusano was a positive person - How he felt curious, excited or sad about things that were happening around him. Definitely so infectious. Shige always got dragged into the hyper activity and positive aura that Kusano brought all the time simply because he could not deny the strength of it.
Now Shige felt glad that Kusano already gained his positive self once again. There was a time in his life when Kusano could only cry. Shige still remembered clearly the worst day Kusano had ever had.
"I'm going to sleep now, Shige," Kusano murmured and buried himself inside blanket.
"Un. Already feel comfortable? Need more pillow?" Shige asked in concern.
"No. It's fine. Oyasumi."
Shige looked at the heap in the middle of futon. It was shaking a little. He knew Kusano was trying hard to hold back his tears.
"Ne Kusano, I just remember that I have a new fighting game. Want to try it before go to sleep?" Shige asked suddenly.
Kusano's body stopped shaking. There was a silence for a while. Only a few second. It was like Kusano had a hard time to choose between accepting Shige's offer or to continue his "sleep". And that was rather unusual, because Kusano normally accepted gaming offers from anyone. But Shige understood how Kusano felt. Not fully maybe. But he was Kusano's "older brother" anyway.
"Okay. Let's try. I'm gonna beat you again this time," Kusano answered after taking a deep breath and removed his blanket.
"Oh no you won't. I already practiced you know," Shige responded, smiling and pretending to not see the slightly swollen eyes Kusano had and the traces of dried tears upon his cheeks.
Shige put on the game, passing a controller to Kusano's slightly trembling hands.
Soon, both were too engrossed playing the game. The room felt less gloomy than earlier. Kusano screamed and yelled when his character beat up Shige's or was beaten up by the other's. Shige laughed, feeling a little relieved. At least Kusano forgot whatever that was making him sad for a while.
"Boys.." Suddenly Shige's mom entered Shige's room, "You've been at it for hours. Don't you feel hungry? Hiro chan want to eat something?" Shige's mom offered while smiling. She's already looked sleepy though.
"I want .. ?"
"I'm not asking you," Shigemama cut his son's word. Shige pouted. Kusano laughed happily.
"It's okay Kato san. I'll go get it myself later."
"Really?" Shigemama hesitated, "I have strawberriess too in refrigerator. You can take it if you want," she continued.
"Un," Kusano nodded happily, "thank you."
"Okay then. Don't sleep too late."
"It's not like we have to wake up early in the morning," Shige mumbled.
"He's not you who never sleeps, just to disturb neighbours."
"I don't. I was practicing."
"Ah yeah whatever." Shigemama rolled her eyes, "Sleep well Hiro chan."
"I'm your son here."
Shigemama ignored him and Kusano laughed madly. After Shigemama left the room and they played another round.
"Let's sleep," Kusano suddenly said and stopped his game.
"Eh?" Shige studied Kusano's face. Kusano put his usual goofy smile. But Shige knew his eyes weren't smiling at all. Shige sighed. "Ok."
They cleared up the set. Shige turned the light off and climbed on to his bed while Kusano lied down on to futon beside Shige's bed and wrapped himself tighly with blanket. Soon there was silence.
"Ne Shige. Are you sleeping already?" Kusano voiced his question slowly. Hesitant.
Shige open his eyes, "Not yet."
"I'm childish ne~"
"Why?"
"I want to grow up." Kusano continued as if he didn't hear Shige.
"..."
"I want to be an adult so I could pretend. So I won't be this hurt."
Shige shifted his body so he could see the pile below. That pile was shaking a little. Slowly Shige got up and sat down beside that pile. He stretched his hand and stroked Kusano's covered head slowly. Kusano was shaking harder. Soon his sobbing could be heard. Shige still stroked affectionately. He didn't say anything because he actually didn't know what to say to comfort the younger.
Today jimusho had announced Kusano's suspension. It was true that Kusano himself that had asked to resign for a while. But Kusano only gave it to it because he had always been forced to do so.
What had broken him into pieces was the fact that Yamapi never showed up ever since they had a fight. What Shige had heard from Kusano, they had a nasty argument the night before that incident. The cause of the fight was simple yet hurtful. Jealousy; the top reason why most of couples got into a never ending battle.
Suddenly Kusano's cell phone rang. The owner didn't move an inch. Finally without moving from where he was, Shige stretched his other arm to reach Kusano's phone.
"Pi chan" was written on the LCD.
"Kusano, It's Yamashita kun." Shige told Kusano slowly. "You haven't told him yet, have you?"
Furiously Kusano shook his head. His sobbing became louder.
"Want to talk to him?"
Kusano still shook his head. Shige sighed and put the phone down. But it won't stop ringing. Finally Shige picked up the phone.
"Moshi moshi."
"Notti, where are you?" Yamapi's voice sounded trembling.
"Yamashita kun, this is Shige."
"Shige?! Where's Notti?"
"He's with me now. I'm so sorry but he doesn't want to pick up the phone."
"Shige, can you pass the phone to him?"
"Wait a second." Shige put the phone a little far from his ear, covered the part of microphone and whispered to Kusano, "He wants to talk to you, Kusano. Would .. "
Before Shige finished his words, Kusano already shook his head.
"You don't want to tell him?! I think it's better if you're the one who tell him, Kusano."
Kusano still shook his head.
"No." Kusano said between his crying, "I don't want to talk to him." He choked a little.
Shige realized it was useless to push Kusano further. He put the phone on his ear again and said to the other line, "I'm sorry Yamashita kun. He still refuses."
"Can you just put the phone on his ear? I have to talk to him."
"Ok. Wait."
Shige reached for blanket that covered Kusano's head. Slowly he moved it away, revealing a shaking head beneath it. Shige brushed the hair that fell upon Kusano's face and tucked it behind the ear to put the phone on it.
On the other line, Yamapi hear Kusano's crying. His heart ached painfully.
"Notti baby.. I'm sorry."
Startled by the sudden sound of Yamapi's voice, Kusano swatted the phone away and resumed to buried himself inside blanket. Shige sighed upon seeing the scene.
"I'm sorry, Yamashita kun. I'm gonna changed it into speaker phone so you can talk to him but I can hear it too. Is it okay? If you mind, I'll go outside my room."
"Yea good idea. You don't have to go though."
"Wait a second."
Shige changed the phone into speaker mode so Kusano could hear Yamapi's voice without it being needed to put it upon his ear.
"Notti.. Baby.. Listen.. I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have let you go alone. I should've been with you, honey. I'm really sorry."
"Go away," Kusano screamed and started to mumble and made some noises so he couldn't hear Yamapi.
Shige sighed again, feeling his own sadness swelling up to this.
"Gomen, Yamashita kun," he said to the phone after turned off the speaker mode, "Hiro, please be quiet. You'll wake my parents up."
Shige stood up and walked outside his room.
"Ne Yamashita kun, what's wrong?" Shige asked once he closed the door and made sure he was out of Kusano's earshot.
"This is my fault."
"How?"
"I think he was jealous. I was too busy. I spent most of my time with Kame since we filmed together and we must promote our single. Once he protested but I ignored him. I thought he would understand. That was my job." Yamapi sighed hard.
Shige knew that Yamapi and Kusano just got together after almost a year they had fallen in love with each other. Once they got together, Yamapi started becoming busy filming his drama "Nobuta Wo Produce".
Kusano should've understood that. But being Kusano, he wouldn't understand. He didn't like to be ignored. He didn't like to be number 2.
"I guess he tried to find a way to win my attention. O God, I wish he knew he didn't need to do that. He's already got all of my life. That night, I knew that he went with that girl. And .. damn .. I should've .. "
Yamapi took a deep breath. Shige was still silent.
"I don't know what got into me that night. I just finished recording for Music Station. Maybe I was just tired because of his non-stop whining and demanding. I saw him walking hand in hand with this girl. He looked happy." He stopped for a second, "I guess I was just jealous."
Shige could hear Yamapi tried to hold his tears.
"Well after that, I guess you already knew what happened."
"Eeto.. But why did you disappear? He needs you."
"I tried to look for that girl," Yamapi answered after took a deep breath couple of times. "I tried to persuade Johnny san. I guess I failed."
Shige still silent, letting Yamapi's words were being absorbed by his brain.
"Tomorrow I'll come to your house, Shige. I'll pick him up."
"I don't mind, Yamashita kun. But I guess tomorrow is still not good. If you don't mind, just wait couple days. Give him some time to cool down."
Yamapi agreed and hung up the phone.
Shige walked into his room again to find Kusano already sleeping soundly. He fixed the younger's blanket and soon he himself drift into dreamland.
That time Kusano had always cried occasionally. It took a couple months before he wanted to talk to Yamapi. That was because Yamapi constantly popped up all the time. Early in the morning, Yamapi had already arrived at Kusano's house. As busy as Yamapi was, he always looked for time to run away and picked Kusano up from anywhere. The worst case was when Yamapi must go to Osaka. He had to ask Shige to accompany Kusano.
Whether Kusano wanted to talk while the older had given him a ride, Yamapi didn't care. That was why most of their journey, there was only silence between them. Usually Yamapi was the one who talked while Kusano sat beside him in the car. Listening or not, Yamapi didn't know.
Both were stubborn. Both didn't want to lose. But seeing Yamapi so determined and patient, Kusano pushed aside his ego a bit.
First time that Kusano had talked to him was when they both on their way home.
"I want to eat strawberry."
Yamapi had to stop his car and turned his head to face Kusano. Unbelieveable.
"What?" Yamapi asked. His eyes widened in disbelieve.
"I want to eat strawberry." Kusano spoke his wishes once again.
"OMG. I love you, honey."
Yamapi swung his arms around Kusano's neck and pull his younger lover into a very tight hug.
"Pi~ I can't breath," Kusano whined.
"Oh I'm sorry, babe." Yamapi pull off and kissed Kusano. "O God.. I miss you so much, Notti."
"We meet everyday, Pi."
"You know that's not what I mean."
Kusano just smiled shyly.
"I'll never let you go this time, Notti." Yamapi stated and kissed Kusano's lips lovingly.
Shige chuckled remembering that time. Yamapi had called him only to tell him that Kusano had already wanted to talk.
"What are you laughing at?!" Kusano frowned.
"Nothing. I just remember something funny."
"Ne Shige, what are you doing yesterday?"
"Nothing." came fast from Shige's mouth.
Kusano laughed, "You're not good at lying, you know that."
"I'm not lying."
"Why did you go with Nishikido kun?"
"We just tried to clear everything. We're fine now."
"Fine as in .. ?"
"Fine as in staying as friends, Notti."
"Really?" Kusano glanced at Shige with suspicious look.
"Really. You don't need to worry."
"Ne~ if you need someone to talk about it, you can count on me."
"Yea yea I will," Shige answered while laughing, didn't expect that the hyper boy would say something like that.
"PI~ " Kusano yelled, calling his older boyfriend who walked out from NewS' rehearsal room in front of them.
Yamapi turned his head and opened his arms welcoming his lover after recognized who had called. A wide smiled was plastered upon his face. They hugged and kissed as if they hadn't met for a year. Shige rolled his eyes.
Koyama walked out from the same room as Yamapi did.
"Ohayou, Kei," Shige greeted his lover.
"Ohayou."
Koyama walked closer and put his hand around Shige's waist, pulling the younger closer. He leaned forward tried to kiss but right in time, Shige turned his head a little bit so Koyama could only manage to kiss Shige's cheek. Koyama looked a little bit surprised but he ignored that completely.

A few days later.
"Moshi moshi."
"Already at home?"
"Still on the way. Nande? Something's wrong?"
"Nothing. I just want to call you. Is it wrong?"
Silent.
"Don't make me to answer that."
"Sorry."
"It's okay. How's today's practice by the way? I hope I can catch up."
"Today's cool. I'm sure you can catch up. Are you driving now?"
"No. Our manager is."
"Ah I see. Who's with you now?"
"Tacchon."
"Oh."
"He already arrived. He says hi and good luck."
From background could be heard, "otsukaresama deshita."
"Oh."
"Say something. What does 'oh' mean?"
"Nothing."
"You still jealous?"
"No."
"Ah I forgot. Of course you're not."
Silent.
"Gomen."
"It's okay. He's gonna tell?"
"Why? Are you afraid?"
"Not really."
"So?"
"He's gonna tell?"
"No, he won't."
"Okay."
"Chotto."
From background could be heard, "otsukaresama deshita."
"Tomorrow don't be late."
"Hai'. Sumimasen. Arigatou gozaimasu."
"You're late today?"
"Un." chuckled, "Just a few minutes. Overslept."
"That's rare."
"Yesterday I got home very late yo."
"Why?"
"You still need to ask?"
"You said the peak already over."
"It was. They added more dates. A lot."
"Is it?
"Un. Almost everyday now."
"Poor you. Need me to come over?"
"Don't tease me."
"Gomen."
"How's your drama?"
"It's okay."
"How's she?"
"Yui chan is nice."
" 'chan' ?"
Laughed "Jealous?"
"No."

Chuckled "Baka."

Silent.

"When will you come to Tokyo?"
"I don't know. We have weekly tv shows remember?!"

Silent.
A waiting tone can be heard.
"Whose is it?"
"Mine. I think he's calling now."
"Oh."
"Gomen."
"It's okay."
"Ashita?"
"Ashita. I love you."
"I love you too."
Both hung up.

"You better sleep now, sweety. Tomorrow we must gather early."
"Masaka? I have school tomorrow," Shige sighed, "Yappari."

"No, thanks. I'll ask kaasan. I think I'll go sleep now."
"Okay. Oyasumi. I love you."
"Oyasumi."
Both hung up.

"Go away," Kusano screamed and started to mumble and made some noises so he couldn't hear Yamapi.
Shige sighed again, feeling his own sadness swelling up to this.
"Gomen, Yamashita kun," he said to the phone after turned off the speaker mode, "Hiro, please be quiet. You'll wake my parents up."
Shige stood up and walked outside his room.
"Ne Yamashita kun, what's wrong?" Shige asked once he closed the door and made sure he was out of Kusano's earshot.
"This is my fault."
"How?"
"I think he was jealous. I was too busy. I spent most of my time with Kame since we filmed together and we must promote our single. Once he protested but I ignored him. I thought he would understand. That was my job." Yamapi sighed hard.
Shige knew that Yamapi and Kusano just got together after almost a year they had fallen in love with each other. Once they got together, Yamapi started becoming busy filming his drama "Nobuta Wo Produce".
Kusano should've understood that. But being Kusano, he wouldn't understand. He didn't like to be ignored. He didn't like to be number 2.
"I guess he tried to find a way to win my attention. O God, I wish he knew he didn't need to do that. He's already got all of my life. That night, I knew that he went with that girl. And .. damn .. I should've .. "
Yamapi took a deep breath. Shige was still silent.
"I don't know what got into me that night. I just finished recording for Music Station. Maybe I was just tired because of his non-stop whining and demanding. I saw him walking hand in hand with this girl. He looked happy." He stopped for a second, "I guess I was just jealous."
Shige could hear Yamapi tried to hold his tears.
"Well after that, I guess you already knew what happened."
"Eeto.. But why did you disappear? He needs you."
"I tried to look for that girl," Yamapi answered after took a deep breath couple of times. "I tried to persuade Johnny san. I guess I failed."
Shige still silent, letting Yamapi's words were being absorbed by his brain.
"Tomorrow I'll come to your house, Shige. I'll pick him up."
"I don't mind, Yamashita kun. But I guess tomorrow is still not good. If you don't mind, just wait couple days. Give him some time to cool down."
Yamapi agreed and hung up the phone.
Shige walked into his room again to find Kusano already sleeping soundly. He fixed the younger's blanket and soon he himself drift into dreamland.
That time Kusano had always cried occasionally. It took a couple months before he wanted to talk to Yamapi. That was because Yamapi constantly popped up all the time. Early in the morning, Yamapi had already arrived at Kusano's house. As busy as Yamapi was, he always looked for time to run away and picked Kusano up from anywhere. The worst case was when Yamapi must go to Osaka. He had to ask Shige to accompany Kusano.
Whether Kusano wanted to talk while the older had given him a ride, Yamapi didn't care. That was why most of their journey, there was only silence between them. Usually Yamapi was the one who talked while Kusano sat beside him in the car. Listening or not, Yamapi didn't know.
Both were stubborn. Both didn't want to lose. But seeing Yamapi so determined and patient, Kusano pushed aside his ego a bit.
First time that Kusano had talked to him was when they both on their way home.
"I want to eat strawberry."
Yamapi had to stop his car and turned his head to face Kusano. Unbelieveable.
"What?" Yamapi asked. His eyes widened in disbelieve.
"I want to eat strawberry." Kusano spoke his wishes once again.
"OMG. I love you, honey."
Yamapi swung his arms around Kusano's neck and pull his younger lover into a very tight hug.
"Pi~ I can't breath," Kusano whined.
"Oh I'm sorry, babe." Yamapi pull off and kissed Kusano. "O God.. I miss you so much, Notti."
"We meet everyday, Pi."
"You know that's not what I mean."
Kusano just smiled shyly.
"I'll never let you go this time, Notti." Yamapi stated and kissed Kusano's lips lovingly.
Shige chuckled remembering that time. Yamapi had called him only to tell him that Kusano had already wanted to talk.
"What are you laughing at?!" Kusano frowned.
"Nothing. I just remember something funny."
"Ne Shige, what are you doing yesterday?"
"Nothing." came fast from Shige's mouth.
Kusano laughed, "You're not good at lying, you know that."
"I'm not lying."
"Why did you go with Nishikido kun?"
"We just tried to clear everything. We're fine now."
"Fine as in .. ?"
"Fine as in staying as friends, Notti."
"Really?" Kusano glanced at Shige with suspicious look.
"Really. You don't need to worry."
"Ne~ if you need someone to talk about it, you can count on me."
"Yea yea I will," Shige answered while laughing, didn't expect that the hyper boy would say something like that.
"PI~ " Kusano yelled, calling his older boyfriend who walked out from NewS' rehearsal room in front of them.
Yamapi turned his head and opened his arms welcoming his lover after recognized who had called. A wide smiled was plastered upon his face. They hugged and kissed as if they hadn't met for a year. Shige rolled his eyes.
Koyama walked out from the same room as Yamapi did.
"Ohayou, Kei," Shige greeted his lover.
"Ohayou."
Koyama walked closer and put his hand around Shige's waist, pulling the younger closer. He leaned forward tried to kiss but right in time, Shige turned his head a little bit so Koyama could only manage to kiss Shige's cheek. Koyama looked a little bit surprised but he ignored that completely.

A few days later.
"Moshi moshi."
"Already at home?"
"Still on the way. Nande? Something's wrong?"
"Nothing. I just want to call you. Is it wrong?"
Silent.
"Don't make me to answer that."
"Sorry."
"It's okay. How's today's practice by the way? I hope I can catch up."
"Today's cool. I'm sure you can catch up. Are you driving now?"
"No. Our manager is."
"Ah I see. Who's with you now?"
"Tacchon."
"Oh."
"He already arrived. He says hi and good luck."
From background could be heard, "otsukaresama deshita."
"Oh."
"Say something. What does 'oh' mean?"
"Nothing."
"You still jealous?"
"No."
"Ah I forgot. Of course you're not."
Silent.
"Gomen."
"It's okay. He's gonna tell?"
"Why? Are you afraid?"
"Not really."
"So?"
"He's gonna tell?"
"No, he won't."
"Okay."
"Chotto."
From background could be heard, "otsukaresama deshita."
"Tomorrow don't be late."
"Hai'. Sumimasen. Arigatou gozaimasu."
"You're late today?"
"Un." chuckled, "Just a few minutes. Overslept."
"That's rare."
"Yesterday I got home very late yo."
"Why?"
"You still need to ask?"
"You said the peak already over."
"It was. They added more dates. A lot."
"Is it?
"Un. Almost everyday now."
"Poor you. Need me to come over?"
"Don't tease me."
"Gomen."
"How's your drama?"
"It's okay."
"How's she?"
"Yui chan is nice."
" 'chan' ?"
Laughed "Jealous?"
"No."
"You want me to add 'chan' to your name?"
"No. Don't you dare."
Laughed "I thought so."
"I'm tired."
"Need a massage?"
"How?"
"You want me to come?"
"Could you?"
"When?"
"Now?"
"You ask the impossible."
"We are impossible."
"Un, indeed."
"What are you doing now?"
"Talking to you."
Chuckled "Baka."
"But you love me."
Silent.
"I do love you."
"I love you too."
"I miss you."
"When will you come to Tokyo?"
"I don't know. We have weekly tv shows remember?!"
"Un."
Silent.
A waiting tone can be heard.
"Whose is it?"
"Mine. I think he's calling now."
"Oh."
"Gomen."
"It's okay."
"Ashita?"
"Ashita. I love you."
"I love you too."
Both hung up.

"Hai'.. "
"Still up?"
"Un. Still doing some assignments."
"You better sleep now, sweety. Tomorrow we must gather early."
"Masaka? I have school tomorrow," Shige sighed, "Yappari."
"Do you want me to wake you up?"
"No, thanks. I'll ask kaasan. I think I'll go sleep now."
"Okay. Oyasumi. I love you."
"Oyasumi."
Both hung up.
