Sara Sarasohn of NPR commented on my Middleman, Why is It Awesome? post with a link to an article discussing the Bechdel Rule and other similar measures, heavily citing The Middleman, including the Morales, named for and articulated by Natalie Morales.

I listened to this on NPR this afternoon as I drove to get supper (morning sickness all day = no cooking for me) and was very impressed with her, and also that NPR was bringing up the Bechdal rule at all. Not only that, but also adding additional rules - all of which the basic gist is that if you have 2 character (or more) interacting who are not white males, then their discussion should not revolve around either white males or anything specifically related to their gender/ethnicity (whatever it is that makes them not white males basically).

I don't even watch Middleman (although you all give it raves - I just don't have a lot of time to watch TV and once I've missed the first few eps can't catch up), but I was very impressed with Morales, and maybe even more just by the interview itself because it discussed all these issues that fandom has discussed so much. It's truly awesome when these types of issues go mainstream because it makes people who don't have any fannish interactions really stop and think deeply about what they are

The article really does kind of get the point, which is less, "I follow this arbitrary rule" and more, "I want at least a portion of my entertainment to reflect not just me, but a diversity."
