I support the Organization for Transformative Works for many reasons, but key among them is because I want us to have that kind of ownership. I want not to worry about getting TOS'd, or for others' worries about getting TOS'd to limit the kinds of stories I can tell. I want to know that one person deciding she/he has had enough doesn't mean the whole thing goes away. I want good, soundly researched information about fandom to be put together by fans, and for there to be enough different viewpoints involved that one person's experience or even agenda doesn't dictate what gets said.
