I'm feeling the need to share a little love - not, actually, because I'm down, but because I am full of love for fandom right now ( Read more... )

I love fandom because I literally learn something new every day. Whether it's the correct euphemisms for various sex positions or the historical significance of certain names and places. I am always getting edumicated by someone in fandom. Sometimes, it's even stuff I don't want to know. But there you go. *g*

Yes! Yes, I love that! And then my students ask me, "how do you know all this?" and I think (but don't say) "gay porn."

I love fandom because it supports and promotes obsessions instead of deriding them. It encourages to let out that obsession in creative, in analytical and in social ways. And all of that is SO MUCH FUN.

There's also the wonderful acceptance and enjoyment of slashing two hot guys together. Can't forget that ;)

I like fandom because it celebrates every kind inter-texuality. I just found a retelling of Superman with the character from Stargate: Atlantis that worked.

Well, sort of. Must better than you'd expect it to, anyway!

Here it is! It's those two who seem to be the main pairing in that fandom, with the snitty one as Lois Lane (as one might expect.)

I just love how fandom encourages that kind of creativity.

I love fandom because it's one of the few places that not only allows but encourages adults to play and be creative. The world of make-believe gets shut off for so many of us after a certain age when we can't make a living at it (except as passive consumers. sometimes.) and I think we lose something huge when that happens. Fandom breaks down those barriers and reminds us how much fun it was to build a lego tower. With gay porn.

I love fandom because it turns TV into text. TV just isn't my medium of choice; good movies mostly just make me want to read the novelization. (And the slash version. *g*) And where else could I find people just as obsessed about certain TV shows as I am?

I also love the international aspect of fandom. Where else can you be friends with people in San Francisco, the Antarctic and Argentine?
