is it bad if...

At the train station this morning I saw someone with a cross on his forehead and thought to myself, "Tommy Gnosis! He must be a Hedwig fan!".

Then I continued through Grand Central and realized that he no, he wasn't a Hedwig fan, and I was an idiot.

...forgive my incredible ignorance here, but...

Ah, thanks. I go to a Catholic University (can you smell the irony?), so you can perhaps see my confusion. >_

I wonder if they're real ashes?

and how early people have to get up to get the crosses on their foreheads? I mean, I was in the city at nine!

a lot of them just looked like black blobs, actually, not real crosses.

Last year, I saw someone with a smudge on his forehead, and thought "dude, you should look in the mirror." And then I looked around, and saw that everyone had smudges, and my overactive imagination automatically assumed that they were all possessed, or zombies, or being controlled by aliens. Because, why else would the entire population of New York walk around with black smudges on thier forehead?

...yeah.

Hahahaha!

I think that's my favorite interpretation of Ash Wednesday yet. :D Aliens! Hee!

It really DOESN'T make sense at first glance, and it seems like an especially bizarre custom to those of us who haven't really seen it before (like you and I).

It would've been funny if you'd actually told the guy to look in a mirror, though. ;)
