Ahh, the LJ bug has bitten you as well! I'm trying to learn all the ins and outs of this place as well.
Some of the pre-fab templates are more customizable than others. I'm using a background with my template (Flexible Squares). Play with the colors and position of the journal. I'm probably not much better at this than you, but if you have any questions let me know.

I think your live journal is coming along nicely. You design your own icons and backgrounds don't you? Well I think your icon above if beautifully done. Excellent job!
Working on figuring all of this out. I'll get it never fear! I'm determined tonight! grrr....
The only thing I can tell you is to play around with the styles and keep checking your layout as you go. It took me a couple of days to figure out the ins and outs and I'm still trying to figure things out. Go into the layout previews and it give you a feel for what your journal will look like. You can also change colors and things as well while you're in your layouts.
