awww. I can empathize with those feelings. The relationship between you two has changed, hopefully you figure something out to see him more often

I hope you figure something out, that does suck that you can't have your boy with you.

if you did move him out, would you still ride him? I know he's limited for jumping/competing, but perhaps there's a boarding situation that will be suitable for him, and you can rekindle that relationship. Would he be suitable for you to give some flat lessons to the right kid on? If he could help with his own cost, would it help change your situation, or is there really no boarding situations ideal for him?

I know how it feels to feel like it's slipping away and that time is finite :/

I could still ride him - we still don't know how much flat work and trail riding he could handle before it hurt him again, and there are some drug options to make him more comfortable for work that we just steered clear of because we didn't want to risk further injury from jumping... But dressage schooling would probably help him, actually, seeing's as the goal is to remove weight from the front end and load the hind. Even just half-hour sessions and trail rides would be great for his brain, but finding the time to ride both horses would be an issue too ( ... )

So sad that your relationship isn't what it was. On the shoe thing, you could always try pulling his shoes for ten weeks and see what he looks like the next time the farrier comes out. If he's still good for flat work maybe you could find someone trustworthy for a lease, even a partial lease could help offset some of your expenses. Good luck.

I'm so sorely tempted to try pulling his shoes again and see how he handles it, but it's just not a good idea. We've tried giving him time off from his shoes in the past and he's come back lame every single time. Our farrier has done such a great job with him I'm even hesitant to take him away from that farrier! The only reliable farrier I've come across who's based here only does trims, and the guy that shoes the horses for our barn isn't even allowed to trim Champ any more because he's so terrible.

Matt has been coming up every ten weeks and I'm sure he would do just fine in carrying on Hans' regimen with Lightning, but see the reply above for why his shoes and leasing are not feasible for this barn. I'll have to find a new place. If I manage to score some students at another barn it might be possible, though!
