Huh, interesting--for me music is attention-grabbing or not mostly depending on whether there's singing. Unfamiliar songs' lyrics are what most distract me, so in my current environment where I'm forced to use headphones and music a lot (because my employer's phone conversations are even more distracting), I've been tuning Pandora to instrumental music of various types.
Oh, you have my sympathy re the noisiness of open plan work environments! I used to work in one of those and it drove me nuts. My boss ended up giving me a room to myself because I just couldn't cope with the chatter around me.
