We dis-agree. I worked it out as 2nd cousin once removed.

Common Ancestors

Monica's Great Grandfather and Linda's Grandfather are brothers.

Monica's Grand-Parent and Linda's Parent are 1st cousins.

Monica's Parent and Linda are 2nd cousins.

So Monica is Linda's 2nd cousin once removed.

If Linda had children, they would be Monica's 3rd cousins.

I'm also recently getting into Genealogy so it's possible my calculation is off, but this is my understanding of it. Interestingly enough, my second cousin once removed is also a Linda. :)

She and my father would be second cousins, which I think makes us second cousins once removed.

I got email from her later (after I sent her a pointer to the family genealogy page) and she said her mother is 90, so Linda is probably a little older than I thought. My great-grandparents had nine kids over a period of 20 years, so no surprises there.

Vis-à-vis Linda, your closest common ancestors are your great-great-grandparents. From the relation you described, Linda is your second cousin once removed. Her children would be your third cousins.
