The Butterfly Effect

The Butterfly Effect got lukewarm reviews when it was in theatres and I don't go out to see that many movies anyway, so I missed it at the time. Last night I remedied that with the DVD, and boy am I glad I did. (No spoilers in this post, but I can't vouch for comments.)

I don't think it's a spoiler to say that themes include childhood bullying (fighting shown), dangerous vandalism (shown), and sexual abuse of children (discussed, not shown). There are people who should not watch this; perhaps when writing a general review instead of talking with individuals it is ill-advised to recommend, as no recommendation can apply to everyone.

I understand that there is a novelization (of unknown-to-me quality), but I don't know if that would be better or worse. Most novelizations of films disappoint me.

I LOVED this movie. I can only assume that it bombed in the theaters because they didn't show the director's cut.

I am less squeamish about this sort of movie violence than, say, _300_, because I feel that in _Butterfly_, the visceral response is necessary to make the scenes work.
