There was also some weirdness that you probably don't see in most purimspiels; when we first approached them about doing this show the event autocrat made a typo, so they thought they were doing the story of Easter -- we straightened that up really quickly, but it did lead to the "Esther Bunny" making an appearance, and that actually worked. :-)
First thought: That is so wrong. Second thought: I would really like to see how that worked. Third thought: This could lead to some truly bad* purim torah.
*as in bad puns, which, when done well, can be quite good.
The conceit was that this troupe (not a Jewish group, in fact) was asked to put on the story of Esther. They opened with Virginio (whose character is kind of sickly sweet) bouncing out, declaring himself the Easter bunny, and tossing eggs out to the crowd. One of the other characters corrected him ("wrong religion!"), and he then declared himself the Esther bunny and tossed out eggs with six-pointed stars on them. It got a big laugh.
The story was, err, not a straight retelling of the megillah, but it was in the right spirit. (This was being done for a mixed audience, by the way -- an SCA event, not at shul.) The plot to kill all the Jews turned into the plot to kill all the Esthers, starting wtih the opening character.
" I seem to be utterly incapable of writing lyrics. I've set a couple texts to music " Hmmmm, we need to get together on this sometime. I'll be Rogers, you can be Hammerstein. :D -- Dagonell
