meeting with my rabbi

I met with my rabbi today and we talked about the Sh'liach K'hilah program. We talked a lot about writing eulogies because I mentioned it early (new content from last year) and because I said I didn't think I did a very good job with mine. I did ask (on the way out the door) about Hebrew.

Other than thinking about those schools you mentioned, what is your goal with the Hebrew? It's tough to learn a language unless highly motivated, in my experience (and I have tried four or five of them, getting to rough reading levels in most but that's it).

Also: yay, Hebrew College!

what is your goal with the Hebrew?

My long-term goal is comprehension of text. (Yes, I know that a significant body of text is in Aramaic rather than Hebrew. I don't mean that.) I want to be able to read a passage from Tanach in the original language.

Conversational modern Hebrew isn't really my goal, though I can see it being useful and if my rabbi thinks it's essential to grokking biblical Hebrew, I trust his judgement.

As someone who has learned BH in college, I would personally say that MH is interesting and potentially useful, but by no means essential. Indeed, if you get to an advanced point, it can be downright counterproductive.
