trip to Toronto

The family visit went pretty well this year. And aside from some incompetence at the border on the way back, the trip itself was painless.
We got up there a couple days before Pesach, rather than zipping ( Read more... )

I have a comment on the Egyptian art. I will admit to knowing very little about Egyptian art as it was not one of the time periods I studied in college (I'm much more familiar with Medieval and Renaissance art), but in general you shouldn't dismiss the Egyptians as knowing little to nothing about how to depict proportions two dimensionally. It's very possible, that they had the capablity and knowledge to be as "realistic" in their 2-D works as their 3-D works. But, it can also come down to whether this was important or not. Early Medieval art was not "realistic," but this wasn't because the artists/artisans did not know how to create something realistically, but more that they had different priorities, such as elaborate ornamentation, gilding, colors. Understanding proportion and representing it are two different things.

Good point -- I was using the word "know" as too much of a shorthand. It does strike me as odd that 3D art was proportional while 2D art was not so much; I wonder what accounts for that.

Another twist is Chrysler. They're actually "DaimlerChrysler" now... so do they count as an American company, or a German one?

Yup. I decided there was just too much ambiguity (company vs where made, company and parent company, etc) to worry about it. While I wanted to give some preference to cars made in the US, to support local workers, things are entangled enough that I gave up trying.

While we were there one of Debby's daughters asked for help in puzzling out the web-based submission process for a paper for one of her classes.

Name names: what was the web-based edu-product? (There are three common commercial choices: WebCT, Blackboard and eClassroom/eCollege.)

It was WebCT. Thank you for listing the common options; I wouldn't have been able to generate the name from memory, but I recognize it from your list.

We're not watching the current season. The characters are the same and have history together from previous seasons but I think the stories are basically standalone. I believe the first season is indeed out on DVD.

We watched the first season (and I thought the first 12 hours were outstanding). B watched the second season and updated me periodically on what was going on.

The various seasons are standalone but the stories intermesh.

I really loved the first season and this season so far. In the second season - the characted of Jack's daughter really got on my nerves.

I think the art gallery you visited was the AGO - Art Gallery of Ontario?

Probably. I remember seeing a sign for AGO, and we walked past several small galleries on the way to the one we visited. Am I correct in assuming that AGO would be the biggest gallery in its immediate vicinity?

(Hmm, I don't think I can now remember which subway stop it was. Maybe Dunlap? Either that or we passed Dunlap but it was farther along; not sure now. We started at Eglinton West, just to help orient on direction. (Since the subway forms a "U" and we were down near the bottom of that, I can't even usefully use terms like "southbound".))
