On Yom Kippur, aside from the food prohibition, you're not allowed to "annoint" yourself with oils, creams or perfumes. caffeine gel might fall under that category.
It's amazing the things that enter my head late at night.
That is, in fact, the exact halachic issue I had in mind. I don't know whether there are any exceptions to that, it not having been relevant to me in the past.
so i'm a fairly uninformed Jew, but i'm pretty sure that Yom Kippur does not require one to sacrifice taking medications. any way you can justify caffeine as a medication?
on a side note, i remember asking my rabbi when younger whether one wasn't supposed to eat things like bobby pins on Yom Kippur. i don't think he ever answered me.
Medicine: as I understand it, medicine for serious conditions is not forbidden (and may even be required), but something as minor as seasonal allergies or a headache is something you're just supposed to cope with. It's hard to argue that a caffeine headache is a matter of pikuach nefesh (saving a life). :-)
