Mac migration, day 6

Day 0: Receive newer machine (yay!), discover it needs a video connector I don't have. Oops; should have noticed that in the specs.

Day 1: Get cable, start Migration Assistant. It announces this will take 16+ hours because, despite being plugged into the LAN and wireless being turned off on the other machine, it's using wifi. Oh well ( Read more... )

So I still don't know where user application data is stored on a Mac,

Thank you! I was expecting user settings to be in the User space somewhere and missed this. Or maybe I assumed it contained libs; not sure. (I don't see anything that looks like browser settings in there, but I do see some other application data.)

Interesting. Joy recently switched from a machine on 10.6 to a new one on El Capitan; she used the migration utility (the one that you use after startup, which is actually usually trickier to use, at least according to the TidBits article I read after the fact). However, due to the fact that we had a "time machine" backup on an external USB drive, it went fairly quickly - about 4 hours? Alas, although the drive claimed to be USB 3, it didn't seem to be transferring at USB 3 speeds on the new computer. (The old one was just USB 2).

Up
