some seder notes

Last night, as has become traditional (three times makes a tradition, right?), I held a second-night Pesach seder that I bill as the "it takes as long as it takes; you had lunch, right?" seder. In other words, the goal is plenty of good discussion, tangents welcome, and we'll get to the meal when we get there and meanwhile I'll put out some snacks ( Read more... )

Huh. The Haggadah we've been using since forever (Regelson) says "destroy" as well. I believe the one we use at my cousin's (Elie Wiesel's) also says that.

Pre- and post-meal parts in the living room sounds great! How did you deal with the foods and cups of wine?

I had pre-set the coffee table with the items we'd need for the first part. When it came time to move, everybody helped -- the wine glasses are empty at that point, so some people could carry a glass and a half-empty wine bottle in one hand, and a couple trips got everything. I didn't need to reuse the small plates everyone had in the living room, which helped -- I could just stack those and take them to the kitchen.

For going back to the living room after, all we needed was the wine and glasses, so we could just pick them up and walk into the other room.

Being able to do the non-meal parts of the seder in the living room really helped us. When people are more comfortable they're better able to engage in what we're doing. The first "it's getting late" clue was when a timer turned off a light that was in view, not when somebody was getting tired of sitting on a dining-room chair.
