In returning to and rereading Mended Wing and Ames Qui Dorment, I'm reminded of how much fangirl Japanese I used to use. It's definitely slipped out of my fanfiction vocabulary because I haven't written anime fanfiction in a very long time. Yeah, I would probably use the suffixes as long as there were a legitimate reason. Like, if I were writing a pure Sailormoon fic with no one from another language coming in, I probably wouldn't use the suffixes or any Japanese and just let the reader assume they were speaking Japanese because they're Japanese, duh. The only Japanese I would use would be names (because these characters haven't been their English names to me in a long, long time) and places. I mean, how do you get around using the Japanese for Tokyo? ;o)

But I guess I've always been a complicated person, because even years ago, I realized that introducing a Japanese-speaker to a bunch of people who either didn't speak Japanese at all, only spoke a little, or spoke it as a second language, would result in some interesting interactions. Especially introducing Usagi to Duo, I couldn't just ignore the differences in their language (I, uh, did have to fudge Usagi's competence with English, though). So, if I were to start writing Broken Wing or Mended Wing now, I would ( ... )
