At least self-publishing doesn't have as much risks as it used to...huge minimum orders so if your book tanks, then you're stick with hundreds of books.
I come at self-publishing from the comic artist perspective, so it's a bit different. Especially with the main manga publisher being known for screwing people on contracts and dropping series.

Yep. Dropping series but still keeping the rights to the property so the creator can't continue with it elsewhere online or off. This is Tokyopop, if you're curious.
Unfortunately most of the other companies that are doing Original-English-Language manga simply don't have much in the way of marketing power that TP does or aren't taking submissions. There's only two I would consider either way, really: DMP and one that specializes in gay romance manga that I had bookmarked on my other computer.
