[Movies] Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief.

Feb 15, 2010 19:55

I will preface this by saying I haven't read any of these books, but I've been tempted. I figured if I were going to, I'd have to see the movie first to keep me from being pissed at how much the movie butchered.

It didn't work. At least, I hope that's what's wrong with the movie.

A few questions this movie left me with... )

movies, reviews

I... haven't even seen the movie, but I've read the first two books, and I can honestly say that the plot holes you've mentioned in the movie pretty much don't exist.

And yeah, from what my parents and little brother have said about the movie, it's a pretty bad case of butchering. There are several important characters in the book that don't even appear in the movie, and... fdsjaiop I don't even want to see the movie. I seriously don't. I did at first, but now? Meh. Rather go see Avatar again. At least it was pretty.

I have a little more faith in the book now. I hope it really does address the stuff I've mentioned here. :/

The monster thing is addressed a lot better. The idea is that monsters can never truly be killed. Just... dispelled for a while. They come from the ugliest parts of humanity and the world in general, which is something that can't be killed. Demigod heroes represent a struggle against that part of ourselves, so they can at least temporarily get rid of them.

As for Smelly Gabe, it makes more sense in the book. Like... monsters start coming after all demigods when they come into their power. It wouldn't be a matter of if they'd come after Percy, it would be a matter of when.

I'd get more in-depth with the explanations, but I don't want to ruin too much of the books for you, and I don't have much time before I have to leave for school.

I will say this much... I've read two of these books in four days, and I've hardly read anything in the past year. They've actually gotten my little brother to start reading and taking an interest in mythology, too, so don't let the crappy movie ruin your perception of them ( ... )

Okay, that makes a little more sense, then. Which is not the impression the movie gives at all. Basically, the movie's all like "here's this camp where demigods come to train and learn to use their powers and learn to fight for some reason we're not going to explain to you." But it really makes it seem like the only reason for Camp Half Blood to exist is to train the demigods in their powers. Which I could totally see, but that removes any potential danger for Percy or any other demigod outside of the lightening theft.

Of course, this does make me wonder why Percy's mom wouldn't have just told Percy who he was and sent him to the camp earlier, where he'd be ten times more safe than not knowing himself or his powers and in an abusive home. :/

THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING ALL OF THIS. Those are the things that kept me from really liking the movie, and my mom was complaining that I was taking things too seriously and that I'm the only one in the world who noticed all of that, SO NOW I FEEL BETTER ( ... )

OH OH OH AND WHY WAS PERCY AUTOMATICALLY ASSUMED BY EVERYONE TO BE THE LIGHTENING THIEF I DON'T GET IT.

I've also been told I think about it and analyze things too much. But with the exception of that last part about why his mom married that asshole (HIS SMELL, REALLY???), everything else was not overanalyzation. It was shit that just didn't make sense as I was watching the movie.

I was expecting an intelligent, exciting new twist on old myths

Me too. And was also disappointed. Sigh.

I was just like... Grover? You say Grover, and I think blue muppet. ::shrugs:: Before he was revealed as a satyr, I kinda hoped he'd end up being the son of Hephaistes (I'm too lazy to go looking for the correct spelling, sorry), and still kick ass even though he needed the crutches. But no. Of course not.

YOU AND ME SOULMATES 4EVA. XD

I bought the first book last week because I wanted to read it before the move. Still haven't gotten around to reading it yet but my boyfriend wants to see this. I have had my doubts and generally my gut feeling for movies isn't wrong.

I think I'll try and get through the book as soon as possible just to be able to point out the fail :)

I thought it had the look of a Bad Movie. Prettily dressed, but bad. I was feeling down about the resurfacing of the "children of old gods" concept that I myself have been using for my Godlings comic. I am very glad that they didn't use the term "godling", and heartened that my characters make a little more sense. (Although this movie exists and my comic remains still mostly in my head.) It's an unfair world.
