Knowing how sloppy docors can be about information to female patients....do they tell you this nowadays when they prescribe the pill?

Yes. Even back in the late '90s when I moonlighted at the Boulder Valley Women's Health Clinic (http://www.boulderwomenshealth.org/), we were telling patients about possible interactions -- before this study was released. It's similar to how you need a back-up method when you're on antibiotics. The difference is that antibiotics tend to be taken for a week or two, and women can take St. John's Wort for years. We advised women who took St. John's Wort daily to use another method of contraception.

Unfortunately, not all doctors are as thorough. :(

I think you need a prescription here for St John's Wort now, because of these interactions.
