I heard an explanation for introversion/extroversion once that basically theorized that extroverts get more keyed up the more people they have around them, but introverts have a sort of finite amount of energy to deal with other people. So that can get used up really easily in large discussions or parties, and can sort of get gradually used up over a period if you're stuck in a small group for a long stretch of time. I guess it's more like an analogy? Or something.
Anyway, that's pretty much exactly how it is for me; I guess everyone has different thresholds for it.
