Maunderings

I was deleting spam today (as every day) and it struck me that perhaps the offers for cheap degrees are quintessentially American. Why actually LEARN when you can buy the credential? There seems to be this assumption in such ads (and the "institutions" that offer them) that actual knowledge is useless or at best optional ( Read more... )

deep thoughts, holidays

I feel a little bad at deriving delight from a death, but Jesse Helms dead makes me smile. One less bigot, especially one with a nationally televised platform, is a GOOD GOOD thing.

I really don't feel bad about it; I feel a little bad that I don't feel bad, if that makes sense, but I'm really very happy to see him go.

Now, if the rest of those like him would kick the bucket too...

How do other people manage to keep up with all that they have to do?

They do? The bounders! I certainly don't. I just try the best that I can and forgive myself the rest.

$22,000?? WOW.

I feel guilty that I thought about participating, to offer something, and never did.

You can still offer; they're allowing new offers right up until bidding closes, in fact. Or you can certainly still bid if you want, through the 14th!

It's the first time I've ever participated in a fannish auction; it's an amazing experience to be on the buying side, must be even more fun as a seller!

It's weird! I made two offers, one by prearrangement which is going to involve not just writing in a new fandom, it's one in which I'm not yet even familiar with the source material! But to raise $150, I was willing to give it a go.

I think right now a lot of people are pausing to see what happens, and there will probably be another flurry of bidding the last day or two.

I thought that was an immensely brave decision, but I'm sure you'll be up to it!
