Eleven hours of sleep last night, but I'm still kind of tired. Have had lunch w/ colleague, done a fair bit of grading, and am about to go see student research presentations. Also have found several more articles that I hope will be useful for the conference paper. Then a bit more grading and the departmental awards banquet. One more day of ( Read more... )

You had to go there with Evita. *G* I wrote the entire libretto out on the back pages of my biology notebook in tenth grade. And although historically it was "I'd Be Surprisingly Good For You," "Waltz for Eva and Che" has become my favorite song because of Antonio Banderas (to my surprise I LOVED the movie) -- the fact that he can't resist being in love with her even though he hates her and everything she stands for pleases me in some twisted way.

Well, the Waltz just swings, too, doesn't it? I rather liked the film although it peeved me that Madonna stole "Suitcase" to sing herself. *g* Figured you'd appreciate that I was listening to the LuPone version...

I think it makes SO much more sense for Eva to sing "Suitcase" -- it was written as a costume-change song, to get Eva offstage and the sets changed since it could be sung by a throwaway chorus member standing in a stage corner while everything happened behind the curtain, and interrupting Eva's story for some random mistress of Peron's whom we're supposed to feel sorry for while Che is suggesting that Eva is a slut just makes no sense. That's one of the reasons I really loved the movie.

I suppose logically it makes as much sense for Eva to sing it, but it felt grabby and bugged me for that reason!

I sang along for years to my sister's copy of the soundtrack! I'm partial to "Another Suitcase" too.

I like the overlap between the mistress and Che in the chorus, for some reason. *g*

I confess I'm not the biggest Lloyd-Webber fan - then again, maybe I should retract that since, as a piano-payer myself, I have memories of my taking requests from "Phantom" kicking an innocouous evening into higher gear.

Oh, I hear what you mean with the Chopin -- how interesting. Not identical, but definitely some resonances there, I'd say.

I had a song from South Pacific going through my head the other day; not a musical I know well, so I have no idea why "Happy Talk" was stuck there. *g* But yeah, when it's original music then there can be echoes of the musical themes, tying everything together so much more effectively.

ALW steals from the classics all the time. For example, in "Cats" the old theatre cat's piece is a near direct copy from a tenor aria in a Puccini opera {Turandot? maybe; I haven't heard it in years.]... one BIG reason I don't care for him.

Heh. NLLDH once came up with a version of DCFMA that went, "Don't cry for me, sorghum cookie." Don't ask!

I always think of you when I listen to Evita. My favorite is "And the Money Kept Rolling In" from the movie soundtrack. I love it when Banderas yells, "Eh-va!". And my own Evita knows that song as "her song" (yet she seems oblivious to the fact that the heroine and the musical itself share her name!).

Sorry you are so tired. What are your early summer plans? Will you be able to get some rest?

That's rather a good dance-able bit, isn't it? Hee. Your Eva will figure it out eventually...

Well, once I'm back from K'zoo I'll have more rest time; classes don't start again till June, so I can sleep later and be on a less erratic schedule.
