A probable break from fic

Jan 24, 2007 18:11

Had a meeting with my department head today and got a doubtless needed (although unwelcome) dose of reality.

I will write the hp_springsmut that I'm committed to, and if I get totally seized by a bunny then all bets are off, but if I don't finish and send off two professional articles and get a conference paper written in the next two months, and then another ( Read more... )

research, the ivory tower, writing professional

Oh, dear. *much, much sympathy*

I am, as of this second, trying to jazz up a very incomplete chapter that is due to my advisor tomorrow. I've had six months to do it, and no, it still isn't as polished as it should be. Even this past weekend, with this deadline looming, it was so much more entertaining and relaxing and good for my brain to write a small fic than to work on this.

:(

So, I feel your pain. I've resisted imposing such a fic-break on myself yet, insisting I can still do both sets of work, but I've been cutting it very, very close. My S.O. says it's a sign I'm in the wrong line of work, that it's like pulling teeth to actually do it, whereas fiction is so liberating. Maybe she's right.

Anyway, I understand your situation very much, and you have my sympathy and support. Good luck with the articles! If you need to chat more about the soul-suckingness of academe, feel free to email. ♥

*sighs* I do begin to think I am in the wrong line of work. I just don't see any way out.

And I may take you up on that email offer later... {{hugs}} Thanks.

Blarg!

Great day in the morning, Cel. That's a lot of writing! I have every confidence you'll get it done in no time. And if I win the lottery, I'll be your generous literary patron, even though I don't know what that means!

*laughs* You'd be paying me to sit around and write, that's all. Sadly I did not win the $240 million lottery last night.

Nope, no book yet. If I had published a book I would not be in this trouble! So the articles are in fact coming partly from diss. research and partly from some more recent research. The conference papers are on closely related topics and together will be the basis of the third article, so yeah, I am double dipping.

No TA but thankfully I have significantly fewer students than most semesters, although doing a new prep is going to make it tougher.

When there is a book MS -- which at this point is looking like maybe 2-3 years down the road, at best -- yes, I do have at least one potential publisher in mind. I spoke with someone *gulp* 3 or 4 years ago now about it, but that publisher does quite a lot in my general area so I think they're definitely the first ones to try.
