I am, as of this second, trying to jazz up a very incomplete chapter that is due to my advisor tomorrow. I've had six months to do it, and no, it still isn't as polished as it should be. Even this past weekend, with this deadline looming, it was so much more entertaining and relaxing and good for my brain to write a small fic than to work on this.

So, I feel your pain. I've resisted imposing such a fic-break on myself yet, insisting I can still do both sets of work, but I've been cutting it very, very close. My S.O. says it's a sign I'm in the wrong line of work, that it's like pulling teeth to actually do it, whereas fiction is so liberating. Maybe she's right.
Anyway, I understand your situation very much, and you have my sympathy and support. Good luck with the articles! If you need to chat more about the soul-suckingness of academe, feel free to email. ♥

No TA but thankfully I have significantly fewer students than most semesters, although doing a new prep is going to make it tougher.
