I'm debating waiting to see PoC on video. I was excited about it until I discovered that it was 2 1/2 hrs long! That argues for poor plotting right there- comedy isn't carried out that long to good effect, which argues for a Lot of padding. I figure, on video, I can watch it in installments- pause it when the funny gets old, and pick it back up the next night.
but, we'll see. In fact, I've a group of friends going this evening...
There were definitely a few bits that could have been cut, but it didn't feel like it was a 2-1/2 hour movie at all, sitting there. Plus, hey, you get more of your money's worth if it's 150 minutes rather than 90 minutes, right? As long as it's not 150 minutes of crap, which this isn't.
If you have friends to go with tonight, you should. It would be fun to see in a group rather than solo as I did. Wish I could go with my sis next week but her two small children will be with her and they're not old enough to see it, or even to send off to see another film on their own.
Besides, there's good eye candy. Including a couple of women, if you like 'em on the skinny side. *g*
I did go, but I still feel that 120 min would've been plenty- that script needed an editor long before the film itself did. Each gag or spfx was carried on too long or trotted out too often. As we all know, minimalism is always funniest & most impressive. & I think they paused before Every reference to the previous movie. (Also, did Bloom just get nearly Every minor character actor from LotR into this franchise or what?)
I'd be interested to hear what you think about another of my theories: it felt as though a number of plot-points were added w/fanficers specifically in mind. Whaddayouthink? May this be the 1st movie that's done that self-consciously?

Hm. That's a possibility, I suppose; goodness knows that there were moments that IMO simply screamed out THREESOME AHOY. *g* I have no doubt but that the writers were well aware of fandom and fanfic... so they might have done. Interesting notion!
Well, but who else in the Caribbean is likely to have ancient local wisdom but someone who seems to be at least partly native? So I didn't think that was intrinsically racist, just inevitable. The swamp might have been overdoing it (I have no idea how much swampland there is on any of those islands though since there's a lot in Florida I suppose there must be some), but that fits into the trope that the quest for wisdom is never supposed to be easy; the seeker always has to make a difficult journey to find it.
I appreciated that it was a woman rather than a man who was this source of wisdom, too. Again an ancient trope of course, I think of the priestesses of Apollo at Delphi. But nevertheless I liked that both the women in the film were strong and competent in their different ways, not weaklings needing to be rescued all the time.
Slim on plot -- to me it was more like we only got half of a plot! The other half presumably to show up in the third film. *rolls eyes*
Oh, YES. Elizabeth fainting was one of those allusions to the previous film that had me trying hard not to laugh so loudly that I bothered the other patrons. *g*
Racist? Hmm. The only possible part is that a large chunk of Jack's crew got splatted and most of them were black or Asian - but he picks up at least one new black crewmember. As for the cannibals and Tia Dalma, I'd find it a lot odder if they were white. It is supposed to be the Caribbean, after all, back then the Caribs were still pretty numerous and there was also a fair African population too, I think.
