Unpacking my privilege

This post is really a reminder for myself more than anything. I know -- I know! -- that I am privileged in many, many ways, but sometimes I don't pay attention to that fact. Some of the categories of privilege (in U.S. society) into which I fit (in no particular order):

I agree, and I never really thought about any of it until I read a piece on the privilege backpack a few years ago.
I'd never really considered being female as lacking privilege either, but as I have grown older I see more and more that it is the case.

Having been a medieval historian for a long time, and using gender as an analytical category, probably made me especially aware of female lack-of-privilege. But for instance even in librarianship, where the vast majority of professional librarians are women, leadership and pay still skews disproportionately to the men.

Yes indeed. All things considered, I really am very privileged compared to the vast majority of people in the world, and even in this country.
