Oh sorry, the "dear birthmother" letter is the rather fancy brochure, actually, that the adoption agency we're working with sends out when an expectant mother asks. (We have to fit her criteria and vice versa for ours to be sent.) So she might get a dozen or more, and then if she finds a prospective parent(s) she thinks she might want to place her baby with, contact is made, and things go from there. We've been active for 9 months now, but no contacts. Still waiting.
The Congress is fabulous. When I was teaching medieval history I went fairly regularly, every other year or two out of three or so. About 3000 medievalists of all stripes, linguists and historians and religious folks and literature folks and anything you can think of. There are often a couple of sessions on Tolkien, both because he was a medievalist himself (Anglo-Saxon and other early Germanic languages and literatures) and because of course LotR is strongly medieval in flavor and inspiration. The conference lasts for almost 4 days and there are always dozens of

I never realized the process was this intricate, with finding someone who is compatible with your own beliefs. I had just believed, mother didn't want baby, someone did, someone got baby. Keeping you two in my thoughts.
It is awesome to know that there are still so many intrigued by the medieval times. Just fascinating.

That sounds so interesting. I'd definitely take a class on Medieval Studies.
