I read at least one series set on Darkover, "Sharra's exile" I think. I enjoyed it. I may not have even noticed non-traditional sexuality in the story when I read it, but my brother is gay and came out before I was twelve, so that was just "normal" for my family, even if it's still not treated as "normal" here in this part of the country.
I do think books that represent a broader spectrum of sexuality will have a positive influence on people, both in accepting others and in accepting themselves.
That's why I think it's important that the media get back into the forefront of such things instead of the very lackluster job that's currently being done.
