So I've been talking a lot in general terms about this amazing job agency I've connected with. Thanks to them I have a phone interview on Wednesday and as part of the documentation they put together for me, I had to write a personal/education statement. I'm really happy with how it turned out so I'm going to share it here ( Read more... )

This is great! And it pretty much sums up all the reasons that I think you would be a great school librarian. You have an understanding of what each individual child needs, this recognition that not every book is for every kid and yet I think you would still find a way to get each individual excited about reading.

Classics have their place but it is also important to let the child who grew to love reading through comic books or fantasy feel that this makes them a reader too.

This is so true. I read so much fantasy as a kid and then in high school, my teacher frowned upon that so much. It was all about the classics or her, which frankly, I didn't care for most of them. Had I not had some very good influences at home, I think I would have been very discouraged to continue reading the way I did.

Thank you, I'm really happy with how it all turned out and yes, that idea that you're only a reader if you read x, y and z bugs me. I read Shakespeare alongside fantasy when I was little and always hate that people judge so much on the genre, its stupid.

I read Shakespeare alongside fantasy

Which just has me thinking about like a Shakespearian Fantasy novel - that would be cool. Or like, Hamlet in space.

A couple of them exist and then just look at any change in how you put on a play. I adore how many options are available just starting from Shakespeare and Greek myths.
