A few comments of mine on Children of Earth and the aftermath WARNING, THERE WILL BE SPOILERS FOR TORCHWOOD SEASON 3 AKA CHILDREN OF EARTH behind the cut.
But I feel that Ianto Jones, even more so than Gwen, was a person the audience could identify with
Even more than that, Ianto was the character the audience was identifying with, regardless of the original intentions, and I don't think They quite realized the consequences of that...
thank you. i always felt that ianto was the heart of torchwood far more then gwen in that early on she was seduced by shiny where as ianto who barely lived through canary wharf who would not be sucked into that mindset again. look at how quickly gwen settled into the torchwood mindset that for all her protests about being "human" in the way she treated andy/rhys. she fought with jack when she did not get her way, while ianto fought with jack for the bigger picture of what of what torchwood ought to be. in coe i missed the jack of the game station who hid guns in odd places, the dashing hero of sleepers, the jack with a plan b. we saw small flashes of the brilliant ianto in coe only to see it overshadowed by wonderwoman gwen and "queer jokes" that would have sounded better coming out the mouths of ten year olds. coe sucked the air out of the room.
I completely agree with you. Since someone told me Ianto died before I got to the 4th episode, I haven't been able to watch it. The only reason I've stuck through 2 and a half seasons was for Ianto. His character and Gareth David-Lloyds acting made the show bareable. I'm in no way a sci-fi fan. I didnt mind Dr Who but I wouldnt fly across the country to meet the people in it. I would for GDL.
If Torchwood does continue which I seriously doubt, no way will I be watching it unless RTD manages to bring him back, which we all know probably wont happen.
Ianto was always the character I identified with - largely ignored, left to do all the jobs nobody else could be bothered with, rarely thanked and not included in team activities - I've been there, so I felt I understood him. Gwen we were supposed to think of as a wonderful person, caring and compassionate, but we weren't shown that. We were shown a liar and a cheat who seemed to think the rules were for everyone else and wouldn't even follow direct orders from her boss. Now we're supposed to believe she's become action woman. It's blatant favouritism. And she gets out of everything without even losing the baby. Did anyone else think there was something wrong with the scene where she sits between Jack & Ianto's body and is crying and Jack seems to be comforting HER? Shouldn't she have been comforting a distraught Jack? It wasn't her lover who died. Yes, he was her friend, but still there should have been more emphasis on Jack's grief.
But I feel that Ianto Jones, even more so than Gwen, was a person the audience could identify with. *nods in agreement* To me, Gwen was meant to be a likeable, human character that the audience could see themselves reflected on, but it was never right. She is always trying too hard to be the heart of everything. Ianto, on the other hand, was never meant to provide the audience with a point of reference, but he does. Because he is human, broken inside after everything he's been through but still fighting to put a brave face to the world, to pick up the pieces, still bravely daring to live again. And that, I think, is the main reason why a lot of people identify with him: because we all, at some point or another, have been there.
He more than anybody I feel represented the audience, and his loss is a loss to us as well as the show.
Yep. And that is something I don't think the writers ever fully considered.
And I'm not the only person to feel this way
( ... )
Ianto, on the other hand, was never meant to provide the audience with a point of reference
And I think that's precisely why the audience identifies with him.
Gwen was shoved in our faces. Everywhere there's nothing but Gwen. See, here's Gwen. Gwen is cool. She has long meaningful chats with Jack. Gwen means well. Gwen gives TW back it's heart. Sure she has a boyfriend, cheats on him with Owen and lusts after Jack. It just shows she's flawed and so therefore, you MUST identify and like her.
The more you push and shove something at people, the more likely they will reject it.
