The Sparkle Project, or How I Intend to Drive Myself Mad with Paranormal YA.

Twilight.

It can only truly be described as a phenomenon. It inspires equal amounts of excitement and rage in people, it inspires people to spend days camping outside a cinema waiting to catch a glimpse of greasy Pattinson hair or underage abs, it encourages lazy journalists to declare it the new Harry Potter and it's power in the YA literature ( Read more... )

Yikes, good luck. Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy series is probably also the kind of thing you're looking for.

Ah yes, I saw that on the list of recommended books but it was just edged out by House of Night because I was told the writers actually put the term 'WTF' into a character's speech in one scene.

Yeah, I'm gonna end up regretting this, aren't I?

I'm actually happy about the Dark Fantasy sections in Waterstones because it goes some way to them actually getting the genres right. I was so fed up of seeing romance-y vampire lit in horror. If it's not scary then get it out of the bookcase. Though some the Dark Fantasy bookcases had a tagline of 'If you're fed up of vampires...' and then proceeded to be full of vamp lit. Sigh.

I own the Cassandra Claire trilogy so when you get into discussion about that I'll be able to contribute. You might want to try the Sarah Rees Brennan stories- Demon's Lexicon and Demon's Covenant. Covenant is just out. They're not vampires, but demons (the title gave it away right?) but she's from the same movement as C. Claire as they both came from HP fanfic.

It's a lot easier to find the trashy guilty pleasures now but I'm still a bit peeved about this dark fantasy section being bigger than the graphic novel shelves.

I'm actually really interested in reading Brennan's book because the HP fandom fascinates me (I spent a couple nights reading up on the plagiarism/MsScribe wank, oh to have been in the fandom as it all went down!) and it would be interesting to compare Brennan's book with Clare's.

Can i also say, you should write for a newspaper or something. Even your rants absorb me like a sponge.

You are a brave woman. I will be following your project with interest. Godspeed!

Evidently PC Cast lives very close to me. I've always been tempted to check out her books, but then I see them, and their sparkly covers, and their hip neon-on-black design, and remember... nah. I've got other things to do.

I am truly a literary martyr. :P

From just reading the synopsis to PC Cast's series I can tell this is going to tick all the boxes in Sparkle Bingo!
