It's been awhile since I've written, mainly because I've been absolutely absorbed in my classes and in a couple of projects coming up. As the parent of the 5-year-old who plays (and loves) soccer, I am amazed that you are able to get kids that age to play smart. G's team pretty much swarms down the field as one unit. The coach, who used to coach an under 19 team (G's is an under 6 team) had aspirations of teaching positions and plays, but that all kind of fell by the waste side. The kids are having fun, though.

I was happily surprised as well! Alexander (the whiny kid I finally got on my side) kept pestering me to teach them the give and go but having watched them play, I was very dubious. But I finally decided to show them the play--I'm a big believer in modeling for kids, especially for the girls, so they can see that girls play soccer. I figured Alexander and I would demonstrate the give and go so they at least had it in their head--so at least they could visualize it. I couldn't believe it when I saw at least one other kid besides Alexander actually executing it in the game. I chalk it up to my strategy of "monetization," i.e., assigning points to those skills, which appeals to their natural competitiveness.
