Sex and the City and Twilight

Oh, on the way back I watched the Sex and the City sequel.  I don't get at all the clutching of pearls over how terrible this movie supposedly was.  It's a comedy, guys.  Yes, it's over the top.  Yes, there are lame puns.  Did any of the reviewers ever even watch the show?  At its heart the movie is about being a woman--working, mothering, ( Read more... )

I can't really say much about SATC; I never watched the show, and only made it through the first half hour of the first movie. Considering that it's supposed to be a comedy, I didn't even crack a smile once, but I suppose I'm not the target audience.

As to Twilight, are you only talking about the books, or the movies too. I never read any of the books, but from what I've heard they pretty much match up with what you said, i.e., badly written but entertaining. However, because my wife is a fan, I did sit through all three movies, and I can honestly say that I thought each one was more dreadful than the last (and I think Jessica only likes them because they're bad).

I thought Transformers was pretty awful too, and never bothered to see the sequel.

Re Twilight: IMO, the books are worse than the movies. Meyers is not a great craftswoman--at ALL--and her grasp of what makes a plot (hint: not Bella and Edward staring into each other's eyes) is pretty weak. The movies are an improvement because they add plot--the first one expanded the threat of the nomads (the three "bad" vampires who intrude on the baseball game) much more, and all of the movies actually SHOW the climactic battles. If you can believe it, Bella never sees Edward & James fight in Twilight (she's passed out), never sees the wolves take down Laurent in New Moon (which--AWESOME--I just love the wolves), never sees Edward fight the Volturi in New Moon (there *is* no fight, they added that for the movie) and only hears about the fight in Eclipse (makes sense, she's not there, but I love that they show it in the movie. It's like an emo teen version of the battle in The Lion, the Witch & the Wardrobe when the wolves charge out ( ... )

I can't say that all the misogyny surprises me. I try to rememember never to look at the comments section for anything, anywhere. Reading them makes me wish for a killer asteroid to show up.
