Tony nominations

So, the Tony noms were announced yesterday. So, SO thrilled about Shrek's 8 noms--they deserve every one. I saw the show again Sunday night, courtesy of Michael--my third time, this is the first Broadway show I've ever seen three times (and I finally got to see Leah Greenhaus in it!). I think the Skinner/Ripley nomination for Side Show was in recognition that the conjoined twin effect they were pulling off demanded a joint effort that could not be accomplished by an individual performance. To a lesser degree, I think nominating the kids in The Sound of Music said that the children (with the exception of Liesl) were, in essence, one character and their value to the musical was collective. I think that's very different from giving a joint nomination to three actors who alternate performances of the same role. While Billy may be a physically strenuous role, I don't think the two performers I saw demonstrated the acting skills in their singing, dancing and book work that I would deem award worthy. I wouldn't expect someone their age to have those skills, of course, but I'm not going to favor them for being young and having a demanding role. I don't vote for the Tonys but my Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle vote for Best Actor in a Musical goes to Josh Grisetti in Enter Laughing, who I really do think did the ( ... )
