I took a quick look at that one in the bookstore and pretty much just put it back on the shelf. I kind of skimmed some of the others and wasn't too impressed with those either. I have heard that the last one to be published was pretty good, but now, of course I can't find it anywhere. I'm sure to find much better fiction here on LJ.
i did the same thing. went to B&N to check out the selection and skimmed through a couple and put them all back thinking fanfiction.net is just as good and free.
p.s. i like your icon. I need that. how do you spell out the sound of a whip cracking?
Heh... that cover pic of the boys is from one of the season 2 promo pics. I always thought it was an... interesting choice of wardrobe for Sam, with that black/red striped shirt. LOL.
The eye color thing irked me, too. Dean with blue eyes? Yeah, no. And even Sam with brown eyes. Sam has hazel/greenish eyes. *shakes head*
I won't spoil or anything either, but another thing that bugged me about this book (besides all you mentioned) was that at times it read like a New York City travel guide. The author I think goes a little over the top in pointing out every street and the directions to and from, etc. I guess in some areas it's necessary, but in others I just find it pointless to the story. Maybe it's because I'm a native New Yorker and I just don't care, LOL.
Looking forward to your reviews of the next chapters. :) Oh, I should also probably mention that the author seems to have done a little more homework on the boys for his next book ("Bone Key"). I thought that one was quite a bit better.
Gosh, I know. Every street any character turns onto is named and described. I've never been to New York but I don't care about street names either. If you're going to describe something give me smells and sounds and crap you step in.
He went a little overboard with listing every single '70s albums as well.
Yeah, he really went overboard with that. I read somewhere that he's originally from New York or spent a lot of time there, and is nostaglic about it. That's nice, but if it doesn't really contribute to the story, maybe it's best to leave it out...
That's another pet peeve of mine. It's a nice touch that he included a recommended soundtrack to go with the book (although they're all from previous episodes), but the listing of every single album was too much.
I've only been mildly interested in these books. Never actually read one. The comics/graphic novels intrigue me more. The premise of this sound brilliant and something I'd love to see the guys work through... in theory! But from what you've mention here... nope. Could easily find much more interesting fic for free.
