Wow! What a great story! Well-informed mamas are hot. And your last two paragraphs make me doubly sure there is no such thing as coincidence!
I loved giving birth; it was the single most bad-ass thing I've ever done. I also loved feeling 'with it' the entire time. I was more present during the entire birth than I was after - all those hormones rushing in and the exhaustion made me down right incoherent afterward!
The process of labor and birth was mind-blowing. I actually have a picture of us right after he was born, and the look on my face said it all. I was shell-shocked.
I can't understand why anyone would want to be drugged up for the birth of their child unless it was a medical necessity, but that's my opinion.
Wow, that was really cool. Thanks for sharing. This probably does not compare, but I had a bad ulcer, once, and was sort of kneeling in a fetal position in the back of a car while my mom zoomed to the ER ... even if it doesn't compare, 'car ride from hell' earns special sympathy from me. But it sounds like you handled everything like a well-informed champ. Bravo. And hooray, Cadoc. :)
No, any time you're in severe pain and in a scrunched, fast-moving box that lends itself to motion sickness can probably compare just fine. I know I empathize. But as I said, even with the whole experience being so intense, I highly recommend it. Birth is a totally different pain than a stomach ulcer.. with the ulcer, you know there's something wrong, and that's scary. With birth, the pain is normal and a guide and, sooner or later, you'll have your baby!
The funny thing is, the only women I know of who really regret having natural childbirth didn't prepare themselves mentally for it. They went into it thinking they were going to have the epidural or narcotics and couldn't get it for some reason.
