It sounds like he was inspired by that CMU prof, Randy Pausch, whose "The Last Lecture" is a current non-fiction bestseller. Common sense truths for living a good, honest life which contributes to one's own happiness as well as the community's. America seems to be experiencing a real "back to basics" groundswell and people are one step away from leaving their McMansions and living in log cabins from the looks of things.

One part of America will move into Log Cabins by LifestylesTM. The other part will move from the repossessed McMansion into the McCardboard box.

Actually, the original post was over a year before Randy Pausch's lecture. But Downes is Canadian, so maybe that doesn't count.
